TED Talk #11

Hi Everyone,

Here is Ted Talk #11 link.

Using three IPODs like magical props, Marco Tempest spins a clever, surprisingly heartfelt meditation on truth and lies, art and emotion.  A magician and illusionist for the 21st century, Marco Tempest blends cutting-edge technology with the flair and showmanship of Houdini.

I hope you like it.

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

#Extra-Credit

Hi Everyone,

Well, the end of the year is coming and I have found that one of the most popular questions from students this time of year is - "Can I have extra-credit"?  Kids are always concerned about making their final class grade as excellent as they can make it.

How can I say no to a spirit of excellence?!

So, here is our next extra-credit.

I am taking it to Twitter with a Hashtag discussion!  (If you don't have a Twitter account then see me and I can help you).

Your discussion prompt is:  Which is more useful to learn: English or Math?
Your hashtag to use is: #robertimath

While you all will be logging on at different times, I think it will be interesting to watch the conversation that unfolds.  You must write at least one response to the discussion question and reply to at least two of your peer's tweets on the discussion.

You have until Saturday 5/2 to get your tweets in.  Remember to make sure I can tell who you are (in order for me to give you credit)

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

TED Talk #10

Hi Everyone,

I couldn't pass up the chance to show this TED Talk to you.

Kevin Allocca is YouTube's trends manager (that means he gets paid to watch YouTube videos all day!), and he has deep thoughts about silly web video. In this talk from TEDYouth, he shares the 4 reasons a video goes viral.

Here is the link.  I wonder if anyone here has the desire to become viral?

Enjoy,

Mrs. Roberti

TED Talk #2

Hi Everyone

Here is the next TedTalk we are going to watch for Genius Hour.

David Gallo shows jaw-dropping footage of amazing sea creatures, including a color-shifting cuttlefish, a perfectly camouflaged octopus, and a Times Square's worth of neon light displays from fish who live in the blackest depths of the ocean. This short talk celebrates the pioneering work of ocean explorers like Edith Widder and Roger Hanlon.

Here is the link for it.

Enjoy,
Mrs. Roberti

Law of Sines Classwork

Hi Everyone,

Law of Sines is the last part of the trig work that we need to do.  It is really a useful theorem because it allows us to work with any type of triangle (not just right, like the other trig functions).

Who doesn't like having no restrictions?? :-)

Here is a link that explains what the Law of Sines is and here are the practice problems that I want you to do for it with the answer key so you can make sure you are understanding things.  You only have to do the even problems.

I will take any questions you have about the work in class.

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

Quadratic Formula Interactive Site

Hi Everyone,

Here is a link that you will need for todays class that focuses on the Quadratic Formula.

Our topic for Essential Skills #12 was multiplying polynomials.  We have 14 people exempt from my classes and don’t have to take the mini-quiz!
In order to make sure you are in great shape for the mini-quiz at the end of the week (if you are taking it), please take a look at these resources.

  1. Here is a website that should help you with the topic.

  1. Here is a video that should also help you.

  1. Here are some practice problems with the answer key to make sure you are on the right track.

Please visit the virtual wall of remediation to get even more help with this topic.

And, as always please see me if you have any more question.

EARN that 100 :-)

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

TED Talk #1

Hi Everyone,

Here is the link for our first TED Talk.

Child prodigy Adora Svitak says the world needs "childish" thinking; bold ideas, wild creativity and especially optimism.  Kids' big dreams deserve high expectations, she says, starting with grownups' willingness to learn from children as much as to teach.

I hope you enjoy it.

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

TED Talk #9

Hi Everyone,

Did you ever have someone tell you not to think about something.  For example, don't think about an elephant.

Wait, really, don't think of an Elephant!

What happened?  I'll tell you -

Sound about right?  All you really want to do is see an elephant.

All these kids want to do is eat a marshmallow.

Well, how about waiting to get something really great?  Is this hard or easy for you?

In this short talk from TED U, Joachim de Posada shares a landmark experiment on delayed gratification — and how it can predict future success. With priceless video of kids trying their hardest not to eat the marshmallow.

Here is the link.

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

Who out there is a genius?

Hi Everyone,

Here is my prezi about the project we are going to be starting.  I can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

Take care,
Mrs. Roberti

Ted Talk #8

Hi Everyone,

Here’s a talk I discovered through the TED talks website, but is actually part of the World Science Festival on brain research. Bobby McFerrin is best known for his upbeat optimistic song, Don’t Worry Be Happy. While I'm sure that song can bring a smile to just about anyone’s face, this video can to.
With a deceptively simple method, McFerrin reveals how the human brain is wired to do certain things at the drop of a hat – and that includes turning an auditorium full of people into a single instrument.
Enjoy,
Mrs. Roberti
